Origins

Cacto is made from the Prickly Pear Cactus fruit. Originating from the Americas, it has historically been used by indigenous cultures for its believed medicinal properties.

In Native American cultures, the prickly pear cactus symbolises hope, resilience, and motherhood. The succulent’s blossoming yellow flowers and believed healing properties represent a mother’s love, patience, and selfless protection. For centuries, they have been used to treat many ailments from sunburn to sickness with naturally present vitamins, fibre, and minerals. To this day, it is not only enjoyed in tasty cans of Cacto but in many Indigenous, Latin and American Cuisines.

Cacto is low in sugar without the use of artificial sweeteners to replace our naturally delicious ingredients. In fact, we ensure all our drinks contain fresh Prickly Pear Puree that is NOT from concentrate. Rich, red and juicy all for your enjoyment … Just the way nature intended!

Prickly Pear contains electrolytes like potassium, sodium and magnesium as well as antioxidants, phytonutrients, plant-based calcium, fibre and vitamin C. Electrolytes have many benefits that encourage the healthy functioning of the human body.

Fibre is particularly beneficial for gut and digestive health whilst plant-based calcium is becoming increasingly popular amongst consumers as a dairy free alternative.

 

Nature’s Secret

The Prickly Pear’s health benefits extend beyond the human body. Once matured, a Prickly Pear Cactus requires very little water to grow as it stores rainwater for long periods of time, similar to many cacti and succulents.

In contrast, a coconut palm can take between 600-800 litres of water to grow every week … That is considered enough water required for the average human male to survive from for around 2 years! With over 70% of the world’s water being used in agriculture, the Prickly Pear is a rather considerate plant that is being used for so many purposes. From plant-based leather alternatives, biofuel, and of course juicy cans of Cacto … We just love everything Prickly Pear!

 

Our Story

The Cacto Drinks Co was founded by Sam Jukes in 2020 after he tried PRICKLY PEAR CACTUS FRUIT for the first time. A bright, purply-red fruit riddled with mischievous spikes and thorns. Despite its abstract, prickly exterior, he discovered that what awaited him inside would soon become his favourite fruit. Delicious and sweet, it tasted like berry flavoured watermelon and his taste buds were never the same again! Not only did it taste divine and fresh but the succulent’s succulent fruit left him feeling ultimately hydrated and full of energy. From that day forth, life for Sam was never the same as he set about bringing prickly pear to the world in a more consumable way … Cacto was up and running.

After several years of raised eyebrows, confusion and glazed over faces, Sam finally began to convince people that prickly pears weren’t so preposterous as everyone first thought. As people ventured their taste buds to a new world of flavour, they soon wanted more and businesses began to sell our delicious cans of Cacto to the public. We continued to grow and now sell Cacto all over the country from North to South. In festivals and farm shops. Markets, delis, stores and restaurants.
